Super Robot Taisen (ス ー パ ー ロ ボ ッ ト 大 戦) or Super Robot Wars in English-speaking countries is a series of console strategy video games published by Banpresto.
The main feature of this series is to offer characters, scenarios and units straight from various works of Japanese animation, from Mazinger, Getter Robo and Gundam to Grendizer. Over time the number of sets used in an SRW runs into tens, making it one of the largest crossover sets available on console.
Released in 1991 on Game Boy, the first episode, although relatively rudimentary, offered to play with Mazinger Z, Getter Robo and the robots of Gundam period UC. The game therefore already proposed what will become in the following games the distinction between super robots, colossal monsters overpowered but unwieldy, and real robots, more realistic and focusing more on their agility and their small size. The game was successful enough to have a sequel on Famicom, then on Super Famicom, console on which the series really exploded and where the bases of the series definitely took shape. The switch to CD-rom support with the Saturn and the PlayStation allowed additional contributions, such as the use of the original seiyuu to sound unit attacks, or increasingly elaborate combat sequences to resemble real cartoons, which have finished ensuring the popularity of a series that has become a real institution.
