Slam Dunk is a manga by Takehiko Inoue about basketball. It was prepublished in publisher Shūeisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine between 1990 and 1996 and has been compiled into a total of 31 volumes. The French version is edited in its entirety by Kana.
A 101-episode animated television series adaptation was released by the Tōei animation studio between October 1993 and March 1996. Four animated films were also released.
With 157 million volumes sold, it is one of the best-selling comics in the world.
Hanamichi Sakuragi, an immature and unpopular young man, is determined to put an end to romantic disappointments when he enters Shohoku High School. He then meets Haruko Akagi, a girl he falls in love with. Following his advice and to please him, he decides to play basketball and join the high school club. During an altercation with the captain of the basketball team, Hanamichi is forced to challenge him to a basketball duel. Sakuragi ends up winning and learns that the captain is none other than Haruko's big brother: Takenori Akagi. Despite some reluctance, the latter finally lets him join the basketball team. Unfortunately for Hanamichi, the boy Haruko is in love with, Kaede Rukawa, all-girl idol and the most talented freshman in the department, is also there.
The two rivals will thus have to play in the same team. Sakuragi then began to really love basketball and after many adventures Rukawa, Akagi and Sakuragi set out to conquer the national title.
They are later joined by Mitsui Hisashi (MVP in college) and Riyota Miyagi, rear with exceptional speed and dexterity experiencing the same love setbacks as Sakuragi. The 5 major of Shohoku is thus formed and accompanied by their trainer Anzai. They will have to beat all their opponents until the title
