Gamera (ガ メ ラ) is a kaijū (a giant monster) that appears in two popular Japanese film series: one during the Shōwa era primarily aimed at children, and the other constituting a trilogy made during the Heisei era which is considered one of the best series of Kaijū eiga. The origins of a giant tortoise are very different during the Shōwa era and the Heisei era which have a different continuity. Thus in the first series Gamera is a prehistoric monster awakened by nuclear tests (in the same way as Godzilla) while Gamera of the Heisei era is a biological weapon created by the Atlanteans to exterminate their first creations: the Gyaos, which proliferate . A new film featuring a small Gamera called Toto was released in 2006 and can be considered part of the Millennium era (a term used to refer to this era in other kaijū eiga series).
