Marketed on an arcade machine in 1983, Xevious revolutionized the still fledgling genre of shoot'em up. Evocative graphics, variety of sprites, end-of-level bosses... The new "challenger" displays its ambition and stands out in particular for the presence of vertical scrolling. But it is above all his original management of enemy patterns – and their artificial intelligence – that will definitely make him enter the pantheon. Masanobu Endô, its author, tells us about the fascinating epic of its creation.
The American programmer David Crane (Pitfall, A Boy and his Blob), and the Japanese game developers Game Center CX, also answered our questions, returning to their atypical professional careers.
